The scope of metal products is very wide, from finished products a nd semi-finished products by steel or non-ferrous metal s, to the iron ore. Facing the pressure of cost reduction, globalization as well as merge and acquisition, competition in metal industry is moving from the enterprise level to the supply chain and industry level, which means the integration of the upstream and the downstream manufacturer is necessary nowadays 8. The whole supply chains are very complicated in the metal industry since they involve with the giant steel companies in the upstream and metal products such as fasteners companies or aluminum products com panies in the downstream, and also has close relationship inter-related with many other industries. With the emergence of e-Business and supply chain management 13, it is possible to t ransform the metal supply chains by utilizing the modern technology and management system s in order to enhance their communications an d interactions in the supply chain systems and further upgrade the overall competitiveness of the industry. The metal industry was one of the key subsi diary industries that were designated where enterprise like Gloria Material Technology, Yieh United Steel, Tung Ho Steel, etc. However, due to the complicated nature of th e industry and various categories of supply chain syst ems, the deployment of e-Business in the metal industry is rathe r difficult than IDB expected. For example, there is little progress to regulate the e-Business standards despites the joint efforts from the IDB and metal enterprises because of the wide differences exist am ong the industries of the upstream, midstream and downstream. Furthermore, the scales and e-Business capabilities among metal industries vary significantly. While there are already many resources invested in e-Bu siness, an empirical study of the current situation of e-Business in the metal industry can provide enterprises and IDB to assess the performance of implemented projects and to develop e-Business strategies of the industry. Literatures related to the e-Business in the metal industry are reviewed. A previous survey executed by MIRDC (Metal Industries Research and Development Centre) in regarding to the e-commerce in the steel industry is also reported.
